Wellness in Workspaces - A Creative Reset for the Season Ahead

There’s something about August, isn’t there? That gentle shift as the school holidays wind down, the evenings begin to whisper of autumn, and suddenly, there’s a quiet call to get back to work. But not in a frantic, hustle-harder way—more of a thoughtful reset.

While the world seems to hit the ground running every January, I’ve always preferred September as my true new year in business. It feels more aligned with nature’s rhythm—a time to refocus, refresh, and ease back into creativity with intention.

For us creatives, wellbeing entrepreneurs, and solopreneurs who work from kitchen tables, studio corners, therapy rooms or sheds at the bottom of the garden, our workspaces are our sanctuaries. And as the world speeds up, we often need to slow down, reflect, and realign.

So as we glide towards September, let’s reimagine our spaces—not just for productivity, but for peace, purpose and wellbeing. Because a workspace designed with heart and intention can help us work with our energy, not against it.

1. Ergonomics: Supporting Your Body So Your Creativity Can Flow

If your desk chair groans louder than you do when you sit down, yep, mine did! It might be time for a rethink.

As solo business owners, we often pour our energy into our clients, ideas and offerings—yet forget the basics. Like a chair that doesn’t ruin your back or a desk set-up that doesn’t give you tech neck. Boy does your neck ache for days!!

Try this:

  • Invest in an adjustable chair that supports your spine.

  • Use a laptop riser and wireless keyboard to bring your screen to eye level.

  • Create a gentle stretch routine to do between client calls or creative bursts.

Think of it as giving your body a warm hug while you work.

2. Colour Therapy: Designing for Mood, Energy, and Flow

Colour isn’t just decoration—it’s energy. And the colours that surround you can either drain you or gently hold you through your workday. Being a creative myself, I love to be surrounded by colourful art and patterns.

Tune in to what you need:

  • Feeling scattered? Blues and greens can ground you and help you focus.

  • Need a creative boost? Pops of yellow or orange can uplift and energise.

  • Craving calm? Soft neutrals and earthy tones create spaciousness and clarity.

💡 Design tip: Place colour where your eye naturally lands—behind your desk, on a pinboard, or even through textiles like cushions or curtains.

3. Declutter Gently: Clear Space, Clear Mind

Let’s be honest—we’ve all got that ‘creative pile’ (aka Mount Paperwork). But clutter can be noisy, especially when you’re already juggling all the things.

This isn’t about going full minimalist (unless you want to), it’s about making space for your ideas to breathe.

Try the “gentle declutter” method:

  • Choose one area: your desk, one drawer, or a shelf.

  • Set a timer for 15 minutes.

  • Let go of what you don’t use, and lovingly arrange what you do.

🌿 A clear desk = less decision fatigue = more energy for what matters.

4. Personal Touches: Make it Yours (and Make it Matter)

Your workspace should feel like you—not a sad office corner borrowed from a budget catalogue.

Bring in textures, treasures, and touches that make you smile. Think of it as soulfully styling your space for success.

Add these nourishing layers:

  • Nature: Plants, pebbles from the beach, a feather from a morning walk.

  • Inspiration: Your favourite quote, a handmade mug, artwork by a friend.

  • Senses: A grounding scent, a cosy throw, soft lighting.

It’s not indulgent—it’s intentional. When your space feels good, you feel good.

Conclusion: A New Season, A New Space to Thrive

August invites us to pause. To gently gather ourselves. And to prepare for a new season—not with pressure, but with purpose.

So before you dive into your autumn plans, ask yourself:

Does my workspace support the version of me I’m becoming?

If not—start small. A plant, a tidy-up, a splash of colour. It’s all part of honouring your creative rhythm and wellbeing.
